Does ESPN assume no English majors watch football?

Some enterprising sideline reporting toward the end of the Mississipi State-LSU game on September 16, 2017, revealed Maroons’ quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has a Dylan Thomas tattoo of Thomas’ famous poem “Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Now that is unusual.

Thomas was identified as a poet of the “1900’s”- technically correct.  But the poem was written in 1947, which is like saying World War II was fought in the 1900’s. And the ad lib from the booth was something like “Fitzgerald certainly raged tonight.”

That poem is certainly about living a full life, but it has many overtones about death. The quarterback’s grandfather – in poor health – was in attendance and it was clearly an emotional time for the player, whose middle name is Dylan!

ESPN is leaving it up to the English majors to figure it out.

DISCLOSURES – My parents met at Mississippi State and I am an English major.
